TILES & MOSAICS

Tiles & Mosaic Conservation

Tiles, mosaics and terrazo have been used for centuries as both a functional and decorative covering for floors and walls. When deciding on the appropriate methods and level of conservation the environmental conditions and level of footfall is incredibly important.

As well as the long-term preservation, we will always aim to ensure the overall aesthetics of the structure and match any repairs to the original. We are able to identify and provide solutions to the causes of deterioration and decay and for every project, building and object an individual and unique treatment plan is developed and agreed based on initial investigation, analysis, research and initial trials prior to any work commencing.

We are able to undertake a variety of different projects from the cleaning of Medieval floor tiles to the retouching and repair of Victorian hand enamelled wall tiles to the removal and reinstatement of Roman mosaics.

The cleaning of tiles and mosaics can involve the removal of dirt, soiling and surface deposits including floor waxes and discoloured varnishes or the treatment or removal of soluble salts, unsuitable previous repairs or inappropriate paint systems and surface coatings which can be disfiguring and accelerate the rate of deterioration. Once cleaned decorative enamels and glazes can be matched and retouched.

The consolidation and stabilisation of tiles and mosaics can include surface consolidation, bedding, grouting, crack repairs and cappings whilst larger losses can be repaired and toned in with replacements, fills or mortars. Traditional, cement and lime mortars matched to the colour and aggregate are used for regrouting with consideration for the material properties and the overall aesthetic.
